Aisling Cuffe Sets National HS 2-Mile Best of 9:54.22
Cuffe, the Foot Locker and USA Junior Cross Country titleholder from Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York, scored her latest
record-setting triumph at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, North Carolina. She was targeting a nine-year-old national two-mile record of 10:01.08 belonging to another New York State runner, Molly Huddle—who is now a pro athlete and the American 5000-meter record-holder. Cuffe had a huge challenge early in the race from Kayla Beattie but persevered to break Huddles mark by nearly seven seconds. Beattie, from Woodstock, Illinois, ended up second in 10:05.61. Its my last individual high school race, and I guess I am happy it ended that way, stated Cuffe, who will attend Stanford in the fall. (photo of Aisling Cuffe by Victah Sailer) More
Grandmas Marathon Has Its Closest Finish Ever
And it couldnt conceivably have been much closer. The Two Harbors to Duluth race, in its 35th running, was won by Kenyan Chris Kipyego in 2:12:16.36, just 2/10ths of a second ahead of Ethiopian Teklu Deneke. Kipyegos triumph, plus a bonus for breaking 2:13, was worth $11,500. Why was the race so close? Well, because Kipyego actually stopped 60 feet before the finish, and by the time he heeded officials urgings to resume running, things had tightened up quite a bit. Ethiopias Yihunlish Delelecha was the womens champion in 2:30:39 with Everlyne Lagat, Bernards sister, the runner-up in 2:31:32. The marathon had 6,333 finishers. In the same days Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon, Ethiopian Derese Deniboba was the mens champ in a course record 1:02:19, while Team USA Minnesotas Katie McGregor topped the women in 1:13:18. Another bit of happy news for Team USA Minnesota was supplied by Matt Gabrielson, who was sixth in Grandmas Marathon in 2:13:28, a personal best by four minutes. More and More
Trey Hardee Is Part of U.S. Tsunami of Talent in the Decathlon
Hardee, 27, is the reigning World Champion in the decathlon so he has a bye to this summers Championships in Daegu. Hes likely to be joined there by 2008 Olympic gold medalist Bryan Clay and the 2010 NCAA champion Ashton Eaton—and a fourth athlete, thanks to Hardees bye. Hardee, Clay, and Eaton, in whatever order,
actually have the ability to sweep gold, silver and bronze, in whatever order, at the World Championships. That tsunami of talent phrase in the headline is Hardees own, to describe Americas decathlon riches. Perhaps its because they have two days and 10 events of a decathlon to spend together, but Hardee observes I don’t think I’ve ever been at a meet where I was competing against Bryan and I didn’t hear him encourage me before a jump or a throw, and the same goes for Ashton. Hardee adds I’ve been doing this for eight years now, and I think if you’d asked me in the first couple of years, I would have said the training is the hardest part of the doing the decathlon. Then the years after, it probably would have been, ‘Man, the 1500 meters just stinks.’ But now I’m at the point where it’s just, this is what I do for a living. I’d probably be looking for another job if there was something I didn’t like. (photo of Trey Hardee and Bryan Clay by Giancarlo Colombo/Photo Run) More
I Know I Can Be the Man, Declares Andrew Wheating
As of the writing of the article linked at More, it was not yet certain whether Wheating would do the 800 or the 1500 at this weeks USATF Championships in Eugene. Whats relevant is his abundant talent, his healthy relaxed attitude, and his confidence. I’m one of the big boys, affirms Wheating. I know I can be the man. So let’s go do it. Okay.do what? The 800 or the 1500? More
I Have a Passion for Running, Asserts Lukas Verzbicas
And hes certainly spectacular at it, as he displayed in a year that included a second Foot Locker Cross Country crown, three victories
at the New Balance Indoor Nationals, a new national high school outdoor two-mile record (8:29.46) and a 3:59.71 mile that made him just the fifth American high school runner to break 4:00 for the classic distance. But up until recently, it appeared that Verzbicas might make his push for the Olympics in the triathlon rather than as a runner. So his declaration I have a passion for running, I dont have the same for triathlon is actually quite significant. (photo of Lukas Verzbicas, in black, by Lisa Coniglio/Photo Run) More
Coloradans Prevail at Mount Washington in New Hampshire
The winners of the Mount Washington Road Race, a 7.6-mile vertical ascent, were Ricky Gates and Kim Dobson. Gates, whod also won in 2009, was passed near the midpoint of the race by another Coloradan, Tommy Manning of Colorado Springs, but regained the lead in the final two miles to top Manning by 10 seconds in 1:01:32. Dobson, in her debut in this race, trailed fellow Coloradan and two-time Mount Washington champ Brandy Erholtz for five miles but eventually reached the 6,288-foot Mount Washington summit in 1:12:11, taking the womens crown by 33 seconds over Erholtz. This race is as amazing as its history tells it is, Dobson found out. It’s so different from Colorado races. Those tend to be longer, but for a while you can enjoy the scenery, and then maybe in the last four miles it starts to hurt. This one starts to hurts about 30 seconds into the race. Brandy and I can really make each other suffer! The Mount Washington Road Races oldest finisher was 91-year-old George Etzweiler, a retired Penn State University professor who covered the course in 2:48:25.
Does Moses Mosops 30K Mark Bring Us Close to a 2:02 Marathon?
Mosop, the runner-up at the 2011 Boston Marathon in 2:03:06 (which was all kinds of aided), ran a world-record 1:26:47 for 30K
on the track on June 3 and he was solo for the much of the distance. The Science of Sport guys believe Mosops 30K ups the ante and has shown that he has good form and potential. Thirty km is not 42.2K, however, and he still must prove himself in a big city marathon this fall or next spring if he is to maintain his status as a potential record breaker. Can Mosop run a 2:02 marathon? Well, after deliberating over all the data at More, you still might be sure of the answer. Butits fun for stats geeks. (photo of Moses Mosop by Victah Sailer) More
On an Ohio Farm, Rob Myers Dreams of the Olympics
Myers has won multiple USA Indoor 1500-meter titles, but hes now 30 and has recently endured injuries, coaching changes, and the loss of a sponsor. Myers, wholl be in the 1500 at this weeks outdoor USA Track Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, explains you train so hard to do everything you can to dedicate your life to perfection in something. When it doesnt work out, its hard to handle. Sometimes you feel like youre wasting your life if it doesnt pay off. It can crush you. By 2009, Myers felt I was running for all the wrong reasons. It was my identity, and it wasnt going well. Now hes toiling on the family farm, running on the back roads he first trod upon as a fifth grader. And he asserts I want to finish my career on my own terms. In London in 2012, perhaps? More
David Rudisha Returns to Lausanne on June 30
A year ago, Rudishas undefeated season included an 800-meter victory in 1:43.25 in this Swiss city on Lake Geneva. Hell be back
there for the Athletissima meet on June 30, along with 2009 World Champion Mbulaeni Mulaudzi of South Africa, who he defeated there in 2010. Lausanne will also have perhaps its strongest mens 5000 ever, featuring Imane Merga and Tariku Bekele of Ethiopia and Kenyans Vincent Chepkok, Augustin Choge, Mark Kiptoo, Lucas Rotich and Edwin Soi. The strong 400-meter hurdles race sounds like a World Championships final, with American Bershawn Jackson and Kerron Clement, Javier Culson of Puerto Rico, L.J. van Zyl of South Africa, and David Greene of Great Britain. Maryam Jamal, who competes for Bahrain but actually lives in Switzerland, will race Gelete Burka of Ethiopia and Ibtissam Lakhouad of Morocco in the womens 1500. Jermaine Gonzales Looks to Unseat Jeremy Wariner Atop the 400
Jamaicas Gonzales was a very, very close second to Americas Wariner in the 400-meter run at the adidas Grand Prix in New York. Gonzales figures this is the year to beat him, but he understands that 2004 Olympic gold and 2008 silver medalist Wariner is one of the best ever over 400 meters. Buthes not running that well, so hes beatable. So, its just for me to get to my best, and hopefully he doesnt get back to 43 (seconds) low shape because thats gonna be hard for me. Meanwhile, Gonzales is working hard and Im trying to better my race with every run, coming back from an injury layoff and figuring to be running this fast at this time, its a wonderful achievement and Im just looking to take it further. NYAC Athletes Will Compete at USATF Championships
The New York Athletic Clubs most highly-ranked athletes competing in the Championships this week in Eugene will be throwers and a racewalker, but the group will also send Julie Culley, who ran the 5000 meters in the 2009 World Championships, and 400-meter runner Mary Wineberg, a 2008 Olympic 4400-meter gold medalist who is returning from maternity. Steeplechaser Lesley Higgins and middle-distance runners Rob Novak (800) and Annick Lamar (womens 1500) will also represent the club in Eugene. New York Athletic Club athletes are supported by an 8,000-person membership headquartered on Central Park South in New York City. NYAC athletes have captured 231 Olympic medals including 119 gold medals since the inception of the modern Olympic Games.
Heres One More Opinion About Running Movies
Everyones got their own list. The one at More comes from the Running Shoes Guru. This might be a good time to reveal one of my own blasphemous opinions, which is that I dont think Chariots of Fire is a very interesting or engrossing film at all. More
Heres Todays Running Song of the Day
I cant say for sure, since this is our 79th running song of the day (seriously, 79th) and some of them blur together, but this may be the first one that makes you cry. Its both heady and heartfelt, and its even become a choice for weddings; some of the lyrics really get to the emotional business at hand. Run only appears in the title, but the entire composition is an invitation to run wild. There are worse ways to start off the day than to listen to this New Order tune. More
