Have Jamaican Athletes Used Penn Relays to Cover Illegal Immigration?
The enthusiatic Jamaican presence, including numerous high school relays and their families and friends, has become one of the appealing mainstays of Philadelphias Penn Relays. But now a cable from the U.S. Embassy in Kingston to the State Department has been released that suggests some visa applicants have disguised themselves as student athletes to immigrate illegally. We havent found a lot of fraud with Penn Relays, per se, David Stone, consul general in Kingston, told the Philadelphia Inquirer. But Stone added there are always desperate people who want to piggyback on the Relays to get to the United States. Thats an issue, and our officers (who interview visa applicants) are fully aware of it. The cable suggested a new screening process designed to combat the high fraud associated with this event, but still allow the bona fide student athletes to travel.  More

Caroline Kirui Shatters Napa-to-Sonoma Half Marathon Record
The 20-year-old from Kenya, who trains in Auburn, California, took more than two minutes off the womens record at the Napa-to-Sonoma Wine Country Half Marathon, winning in 1:15:45. Julia Stamps Mallon, the 2009 Napa-to-Sonoma champion, was the second woman in 1:18:27. I felt strong and knew I had a good pace but never really had Caroline in my sights after a few miles into the race, commented Mallon. She disappeared once we started winding through the vineyards on the flat section so I just focused on running a strong race. Tesfaye Sendeku of Ethiopia repeated as mens titleist with a 1:04:37, with Christian Hesch next in 1:04:53 and Sergio Reyes, the 2010 USA Marathon champion, third in 1:04:55. Sendeku and Kirui each won a six-liter bottle of sparkling wine from Gloria Ferrer, a Ball Watch and $750 in prize money, with Kirui receiving a bonus of $500 for breaking the course record. More

I Promise Not to Disappoint Kenyans in Daegu, Says Peter Kirui
Kirui was the winner of the 10,000-meter run at the Kenyan National Championships, the trials for the World Championships in Daegu. His 27:32.1 in Nairobi topped Wilson Kiprop, who had led with a lap to go, by eight-tenths of a second. I knew the race was going to be tough with all the big names around and my coach advised me to run specifically behind Wilson Kiprop and Geoffrey Mutai (the Boston Marathon champ, who would finish fourth), then break off in the last 300m and it is exactly what I did and won the race, explained Kirui, whose most significant previous victories were a pair of far-flung half marathons. More.

Eugene Womens Half Marathon Course Will Be Previewed
The Enterprise Eugene Call Center and Eugene Womens Half Marathon will provide runners and walkers with a chance to see parts of the 13.1-mile course prior to the September 4 race.  The Preview Run of eight miles of the course will take place on August 14 at 8:00am at the Enterprise Call Center (8th and Charnelton) and is free to all participants. This event was such a huge success last year, with close to 100 people coming out, that we had to do another Preview Run says Nicole Teter, the Eugene Womens Half Event Director (and still the American 800-meter indoor recordholder). Chicago Marathon Announces New Media Contact
The Bank Of America Chicago Marathon has a new primary media contact and its Robin Monsky, a name many readers will be familiar with. Monsky served as the Chicago Marathons media relations director from 1997 to 2000 when the race saw its largest ever period of expansion, growing from 11,000 runners to over 33,000 and posting double-digit percentage increases each fall.  Monsky has also worked at six Super Bowls, four World Series, one Davis Cup Final, several regional NCAA basketball tournaments and the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games (where she was Press Chief at Centennial Olympic Park).  Since 2000, Monsky has occasionally popped back into the running community through her ongoing work with the Laureus World Sports Academy.   There are undoubtedly a lot of media whose phone numbers and emails have changed over the last ten-plus years while she was off pursuing other interests, so Monsky is looking forward to hearing from them (or at least most of them!) at the Chicago Event Management office.

Are Midwest Races a Little Less Popular This Summer?
Thats the suggestion of Jeff Graves, whose company Vision Events Management oversees a number of races in the region including the August 20 Madison Mini-Marathon, actually a half marathon and a 5k. Last years half in Madison filled well in advance and the cap was raised by 800 to 5,500 spots. But Graves states I dont know if well get there or not. Were seeing a trend in Midwest events that numbers are tracking even or behind. He adds we were just on fire for a long time and just blowing numbers away. We did more marketing this year than weve done the first two years put together. we cant put our finger on it. He notes that reduced fees for early entries arent always an enticement. People are holding onto their money longer, waiting to see if in theyll be in town or in shape, comments Graves. More

How Many Roadraces Are There Just for Masters?
Other than national age group championships we knew about, I never really thought about this one. But Connecticut has two certified 10ks for the over 40 runner, including last Sundays Montville Masters 10K along wooded roads that get quite hilly at times. The victors were teacher and coach Kevin Grant, 45, in 37:48 and Catherine Sikorski, 43, in 47:14. Eighty-two-year-old Geoff Eltherington completed the 10k in 54:11. More
