A new study finds that an active lifestyle may help protect against Alzheimer’s-related brain changes in people who have a well-known genetic risk factor. This factor is the e4 allele (version) of the apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene.
“The presence of an APOE e4 allele is the most established genetic risk factor for Alzheimer disease, with a higher percentage of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease having an e4 allele in comparison with the general population,” the authors write in the article published online Jan. 9 in the journal Archives of Neurology.
It’s been suggested that the presence or absence of this gene variant might affect the relationship “between lifestyle factors such as exercise engagement and risk of cognitive decline and dementia,” added researcher Denise Head and colleagues at Washington University, St.

to help people living with HIV and their care providers choose seizure drugs that do not interact negatively with antiretrovirals (ARVs).
Drug interactions between AEDs [antiepileptic drugs] and ARVs could result in progression to AIDS and/or reduced seizure control, said Gretchen Birbeck, MD, MPH, of Michigan State University and a lead author of the recommendations in an accompanying announcement. Providing guidelines that help physicians select appropriate therapies for their patients with epilepsy and HIV/AIDS will ultimately improve patient outcomes and possibly decrease the public health threat of the development of drug-resistant HIV.
Seizure disorders, such as epilepsy, are common among people living with HIV, Birbeck and her colleagues note.

Drug research, even from clinical trials sponsored by the federal government, routinely is suppressed, harming patients and increasing health care costs, according to new data highlighting an ethical controversy that continues to plague the field of medicine. “The current situation is a disservice to research participants, patients, health systems and the whole endeavor of clinical medicine,” according to an editorial accompanying the papers published in the British Medical Journal.
